How Beyond Words works:

Four weeks, 3 steps each week.

A typical week:

1. Watch

You will watch a video (approx. 15-25 minutes)in which I talk about one element of the therapeutic relationship. I will site important authors and researchers to ground your learning, discuss the experience of this basic element and invite you to think about it for yourself.

2. Create

You will watch a short  10 minute video that invites you to engage in an altered book technique that is designed to help you experience and gain insight into the basic element of the therapeutic relationship for the week. You will create your art (this takes anywhere from 1/2 hour to 2 hours depending on how much you put into it) and answer some reflection type questions.

3. Share

Upload a picture of your art to the classroom page and participate on an hour group call where you share your reflections, ask questions, deepen your insight.  This call is held on a bridge line where everyone participates.  If you’ve never done this before I will give you thorough instructions.  It’s great to have everyone meet together at the same time.  Call dates: 1/26, 2/2, 2/16.2/23 .  These are all Fridays.  We will meet from 11:00-12:00 Pacific.  (Please note:  If you are unable to attend the call, there is a recording available for you to listen to.)

Materials you will need for the class:

Acrylic Matt Medium (AKA Gel Medium)

Foam brush

Binder clamps

80-100lb. Drawing paper (printmaking paper or Bristol is good)

Acrylic craft paint

Scissor

Oil pastels

Cheap drawing paper (sketch pad paper is fine)

Exacto knife

Magazines for images

Shipping tags

Watercolor paint tray

One envelope

Pen or pencil

camera (your phone is just fine)

A book to alter

Once you register, you will receive 2 videos that instruct you how to choose a book to alter for the course and how to prepare your book for the course.

Special talents that you need for the class:

NONE You don’t need to know how to make art or how to paint or how to make something look like something.  You just need a willingness to experiment.

HOWEVER, you do need to know how to post a picture online.  We have a tutorial that will help you learn, and at any time, Tara is available to assist you with technical support.

How long with it take me per week to complete all assignments?

Count on about 3 hours.  The class is very flexible and you don’t have to have blocks of 3 hours.  You can do it little by little or all at once.

What if I miss the phone call?

No problem.  While it is very useful to  have live interaction and be asked personalized questions on the call, there will be a recording available.  You will be able to listen at your leisure.

Can I get CE’s?

What kind of experience as a healing professional do I need in order to attend?

I have all professionals from all levels of experience participate–beginning to advanced.  All of them have reported great benefit from the material and experience no matter where they were in their career. Students, trainees, seasoned therapists, retired psychologists, interns, recreational therapists, non-profit employees, private practice therapists…..the variety is wonderful and welcomed.

What if I live outside of the US and want to participate?  Can I?

Yes, Beyond Words is open to folks outside of the US.

What if life gets in the way and I get behind or can’t complete the course during the live calls?

No worries! The course material will stay up for 3 months and you will have access to ALL of the material during this time. This means you can even go back and refer to videos and art activities if you need to. You can listen to the call recordings and finish up anything that you didn’t get to during the live call dates. For this reason, I will not be able to honor requests for refunds or requests to be put in the next Beyond Words group.

What is your cancellation policy?

Once you have registered, there will be no refunds available. Remember though, you do have the chance to work with the material at your own pace for the next 3 months.
